“Lost him,” Tate muttered in Mike’s ear as he reached out to claim his drink.

“Oh hey.” Tate stopped to take in Carl. “Well, aren’t you as sweet as butter on a short stack.”

“Tate, this is Carl.”

“Hey.” Tate tipped what had survived of his margarita down his throat.

“So, Tate. How do you like being Mike’s dirty little secret?” Carl sneered.

“Huh?” Tate’s hand had been resting on Mike’s back. “Oh.” Tate looked at

his hand and laughed. “I’m just—”

“Can’t grab a bite anywhere, can’t even catch a movie,” Carl went on. “Does

he give you a whole bunch of excuses, or do you know just what a sorry,

chicken-hearted piece of shit he is?”

Mike hadn’t realized how drunk Carl was—or how bitter. Carl had been the

one to dump him, to lay it out there, back Mike into a corner. If you ever felt a damned thing for me, choose. The team or me.

“Sweet Baby Jesus, honey.” Tate went into full Southern-belle mode. “I’ve

known the boy for six years, and you just ain’t in that picture. Time to move on.

You should see the strappin’ fine thing putting a smile on his face these days.

Wish I could break me off a piece of that sugar.”

Carl’s cheeks darkened.

Unfortunately for him, Tate had barely gotten started. “I’m only his

roommate, but let me tell you the walls are thin and, damn, there is some wild

ridin’ goin’ on in through there.”

Now Mike’s face burned. “Okay. Thank you. TMI.”

“Same old Mike, though.” Carl took a step closer. “Sit back and let the rest of us entertain you with our stupid little feelings.” With a disgusted twist on his lips, he added, “Hope you get a taste of that someday. Fall for someone who’s

even more fucked up and twice the cold-hearted bastard you are.”
